Wix vs a custom website: which is right for your small business?

I build custom websites for a living, so here's something you might not expect: for some businesses, Wix or Squarespace is the right answer. The real question isn't which is better — it's which one brings in more clients for what you pay.

What's the actual difference?

Wix and Squarespace are website builders: you pay a subscription, pick a template and drag blocks around. Hosting, security and updates are handled for you.

A custom website is designed and built for your specific business: the copy, the structure, call and WhatsApp buttons, a lead dashboard and whatever your industry needs. You pay for the project, then optionally a monthly care plan.

Both get you online. The difference is who does the thinking about how to sell, and how much control you have afterwards.

How much do Wix, Squarespace and a custom site cost?

As of October 2026, Wix's official plans page lists Premium plans from about $17/month (Light) up to about $159/month (Business Elite), billed yearly, and notes that prices vary by location. You need Core or higher to sell online.

Squarespace's pricing page lists plans from $10/month (Basic, billed annually) to $23/month (Advanced), with a 2% fee on store sales on the Basic plan.

A custom website from Sistema 24 runs $1,500 – $3,000 for a one-page landing site and $3,500 – $7,000 for a business website of up to 8 pages — a one-time project fee, plus domain and hosting in your name. The optional care plan starts at $150 – $350 / month. Full breakdown on the website cost page.

When should you use Wix or Squarespace?

I'd recommend a website builder when:

  • You're testing an idea and don't know yet if the business will work.
  • Your budget is very tight and you have time to learn the tool.
  • You need a simple brochure site with no special forms or integrations.
  • You enjoy making changes yourself, often, without waiting on anyone.

When is a custom website worth it?

Custom pays off when the website has to sell, not just exist. Two real projects (both clients in Chile, built remotely the same way I work with US businesses):

  • Textil Judith: customers find their school and send a uniform quote straight to WhatsApp, with pages built to show up on Google.
  • CIVI Propiedades: a real estate brokerage with its own listing search, a calculator and every lead saved in a dashboard.

You can try to approximate that with templates and plug-ins, but it ends up as a patchwork. Go custom when:

  • Each new client is worth a lot (a listing, a program, a high-value service).
  • You need something specific to your industry: search, quotes, bookings, sign-ups.
  • You want to know how many leads came in and from where, not just page views.
  • Ranking on Google and loading fast on mobile matter to you.
  • You don't have time to build and maintain the site yourself.

Is Wix bad for SEO?

No. Google doesn't penalize a site for being built on Wix or Squarespace. Google's own SEO Starter Guide says there are no secrets that automatically rank a site first; what matters is helpful content and a well-organized site.

Where builders and custom sites differ is speed and technical control. Google measures page experience with Core Web Vitals — for example, the main content should load within 2.5 seconds (LCP) and the page should respond within 200 milliseconds (INP). A template loaded with apps makes those numbers harder to hit; a custom build is designed around them. For the bigger picture, see SEO services.

What if I want to switch later?

Almost nobody checks this before signing up. Wix's help center says sites run on Wix's servers and can't be exported to an external host. If you want to move later, in practice you rebuild the site (you can keep your domain).

With a custom website, the code, domain and customer data are in your name. If you ever want to work with another developer, you take everything with you.

How do I decide? Run these numbers

This is the same math I do in the free assessment:

  1. 01

    What's one client worth?

For example, if each new client is worth $1,000 to you, a site that brings in one extra client a month pays for itself quickly.

  2. 02

How many leads do you lose today?

Messages answered too late, forms nobody checks, visitors who can't find your pricing.

  3. 03

    What's your time worth?

If building and maintaining the site takes you hours every week, add that to the subscription cost.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix free?

Wix has a free plan that shows Wix ads and doesn't use your own domain. To connect your domain and sell, you need a paid Premium plan.

Can I move my Wix site to another host?

According to Wix's help center, sites can't be exported to an external host. You can keep your domain, but the site needs to be rebuilt.

Is a custom website harder to update?

It depends on how it's delivered. I include a dashboard for what changes most and an optional care plan for everything else.

How long does a custom website take?

A one-page landing site takes 7 to 10 days. A site with up to 8 pages takes 3 to 4 weeks. You see a prototype in 72 hours.

What should I choose on a tight budget?

Start with Wix, Squarespace or a simple, well-written page. Once the site brings in inquiries, investing in custom makes sense.
